Janai Purnima, Raksha Bandhan, and Kwati Khane Din are three important occasions celebrated together across Nepal, each carrying deep cultural and spiritual significance. Every year, on the full moon day of Shrawan (usually in August), these festivals unite communities in rituals of purity, protection, and togetherness.
Janai Purnima is one of the most sacred Hindu festivals in Nepal. On this day, Hindu men, especially from Brahmin and Chhetri communities, change their Janai (the sacred thread) after a purification ritual. Priests (pandits) tie a yellow or red Doro (protective thread) around the wrist, symbolizing blessings, protection from negative energies, and commitment to righteousness. Many devotees also visit holy places like Gosaikunda, Kumbheshwar Temple, and other sacred ponds for ritual bathing.
While Janai Purnima focuses on spiritual renewal, Raksha Bandhan celebrates the emotional bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters tie a rakhi or protective thread on their brothers’ wrists, wishing them long life and prosperity. In return, brothers give gifts and promise to protect their sisters. In Nepal, this tradition blends beautifully with Janai Purnima, as both involve sacred threads and blessings.
The day is also known as Kwati Khane Din among the Newar community. Kwati is a traditional soup made from nine types of sprouted beans, known for its high nutritional value. Consumed during the monsoon season, Kwati boosts immunity and energy, making it both a festive and practical tradition. Families gather to prepare and enjoy Kwati together, symbolizing unity and good health.
These three festivals, though distinct in rituals, share common themes — protection, renewal, family unity, and community bonding. They bring together people of different regions and ethnic backgrounds, showcasing Nepal’s rich cultural diversity.
